How to Secure Your Race Bib Like a Pro

Have you ever closely examined a race photo and noticed how neatly some runners have their race bibs pinned on? How many of them have their bib numbers perfectly placed in the right spot, without any wrinkles or misalignment?

I’ve been racing for over 50 years and have participated in more than 1,000 events, yet securing my bib number on my running singlet is still a challenge. Whether I try to pin it while the singlet is on my body or lay it out on a table or car seat, I can never seem to get it straight and in the perfect position. More often than not, I end up taking it off and starting over—sometimes at the risk of missing the starting gun entirely!

And let’s not forget the nightmare of forgetting safety pins altogether. Have you ever had to run a race with your bib tucked into your shorts or holding it in your hand? It’s not the ideal situation, to say the least.

Then, there’s the age-old dilemma of where to place the pins—through the pre-punched holes, or do you go for a tighter fit by pinning through the bib itself? And those tear-off portions on the bib—should you leave them on or rip them off? The answer likely depends on what the tear-offs are for. You might need to keep them intact if they’re for claiming your gear bag or getting a free drink at the finish line. Oh, and don’t forget to fill out the emergency medical info on the back of your bib—it’s always a good idea.

A recent discovery for me, especially as I got back into triathlons, was the bib belt. I hadn’t used one before last year, but once I tried it, I realized it could be a game-changer for running races as well. It’s not a perfect solution, but what I really appreciate is that it eliminates the need for safety pins, which helps save the race director money and is more environmentally friendly. Plus, if the weather turns chilly and you want to strip off a layer during the race, the bib belt keeps your number visible without any hassle.

Do you have any tips or tricks for avoiding the frustration of bib placement before your race? Share your ideas!
